I've never had a baby myself, so I don't know how aware/conscious the baby is right after birth of if the mother's there or it's a paid nurse, but I'll take your word for it that it's important she should've been there. I mostly saw it as it setting up a pattern of neglect for the rest of the kid's life -- "yes, Trig is a precious gift of God, but Heaven forbid I have to actually take care of him".
