Choices. Ficlet.
Loosely inspired by Mamono's ficlet comparing Seto and Marik. Marik and Seto centric. ygo_rpg based, sort of anyway. ^^;
Marik makes choices for other people.
He decides if they live or die (they'll die in the end anyway, so he usually choses die), if they will suffer or not (being ignored is dull, so he usually choses suffer), and all those other little things that people are just too stupid to be able to take care of for themselves.
Of course, they tend not to be happy about it. Having your control taken from you is never a pleasant experience.
Especially if you're Seto Kaiba, and control isn't the only thing that was taken from you.
Especially if the first thing you lost was your 'dearest baby brother' as Marik had so mockingly called Mokuba before throwing a horribly mutilated corpse into Seto's cell.
Seto didn't have a choice as how to react. His body did that for him, slamming against up the bars and his fingers curling around a neck protected by gold chokers. For his efforts, he got a laugh and amused look. For that, Marik got a glare that was ruined by the broken look in eyes of a shattered blue. Yes. Colors can be shattered. Everything can be shattered. Including bones, as even the most rudimentary glimpse of Mokuba's corpse showed so very clearly.
Marik could have chosen to use the Eye to read Seto's mind, but he didn't need to simply to know what thoughts ran through Seto's mind. There were many but only one interested him: 'I hate you'. Marik let that thought wash over him, caress him, warm him. Seto's hatred might be a cold thing to him, but to Marik it burnt in much the same manner that Mokuba had burnt at the stake. Marik needed that hatred so desperately, needed so desperately to be warm. The cold the meds had revealed to him haunted him with their promise of insignificance, of surviving when nothing else did. Interesting really. In a way, he had just placed Seto within his own terrible nightmare. Of having everything destroyed yet somehow still being around to know of it. Not that Mokuba was the world of course, but Marik doubted that Seto knew that.
Seto had chosen to build his world around Mokuba. He had chosen to give one person such importance to him. His choice. Marik envies that, though he'd never admit it. Formed of hared, Marik is inhuman. Soulless. He will always do the most evil, damaging thing possible because he is evil in its purest form. No compassion taints his actions, no pity or mercy ever touches the choices that he makes for other people. It's a shame Marik can't make choices for himself.
Marik didn't chose to exist.
He didn't chose to be evil.
He didn't chose to be so pure that he could never expand, never grow, never change.
He didn't chose to be evil, and didn't chose to be so purely evil that the concept of being anything else never occurs to him.
He didn't chose to be given no choice.
Choices define what you are.
Marik makes none for himself.
He is nothing.
Seto wins in the end, though the victory is Pyrhic.

Re: ^^ Had to come look~
And look! Seto wins. A highly Pyrrhic victory, but he wins :P

Re: ^^ Had to come look~
It's practically the only way to get a reaction from Seto.
Now that's a sad thing.

Re: ^^ Had to come look~
Tell you what, you tell me what you were thinking and only if it was something that I had already considered will Marik do anything about it. Otherwise, if like the Mokuba-death thing it is completely new, then I'll congratulate you and let it slide.

Re: ^^ Had to come look~
Though I did consider having all business outposts in the Communist countries taken over by the government... since I'm assuming that Kaiba Corp would have the parts manufactured there, if not the actual duelling systems.

And on top of that, poor Marik and Seto.
>.<
Though, still very nicely written. I liked the ending *nods* With both characters choices (or lack-there-of).
