Political-fandom update.

[livejournal.com profile] ceresi had an an interesting post about Bush, torture and the need for Time Turners. Short but good.

And any other Animorphs fans out there? [livejournal.com profile] nyrehtak_nna linked in a recent post to a fascinating letter about the final book that K.A. Applegate wrote. I'll be on the first to admit that I hated the last book.

Why?

Because of the cliffhanger. Because even after the war, they weren't done fighting. Because they got no peace. Because it just seemed so unfair that after everything, they should have to keep suffering. I can deal with character death. I can deal with unhappiness. But not letting them grieve in peace and forcing them out on another fight?

...Blah. And I loathe cliffhangers. Especially the kind she did where there is absolutely no hint as to how it ends.

Apart from that though, the letter is worth reading. She makes good points, she has good reasons and I like her attitude.

I still hate the book's ending but at least I understand what she was trying to achieve.

Hm. I should really read the whole series and such, but with a disappointing ending... is it worth those of us whom have not read a thing to pick it up and read it despite an ending like that? And, is it safe to read the letter having not read it yet? /series, that is.

That letter was printed in the final book, wasn't it? I remember seeing it somewhere before.

I never finished reading the series for a lot of reasons, first because I'd already spent, like, five years following it devotedly and even I have limits to my fandom obsessions. And second, I heard how depressing it was and decided not to find out for myself.

Personally speaking, I don't like it when authors get political/meta in their books. Or, to be more accurate, politics and meta have their places, but I prefer them to be clearly labeled and defined. Of course, this would drastically reduce their effectiveness, but blah. I want my charas happy and alive. Is this so much to ask? :(

There was a different letter printed in the end of the last book, one that didn't explain her reasoning anywhere near as well.

...Awww. I possess the entire Animorphs series, but was lucky enough to get into it while it was already ended/practically over.

*hugs* I'd prefer a non-cliffhanger ending, personally. I can deal with Rachel being dead, I can deal with Tobias being unhappy, I can deal with Ax leaving. What I can't deal with is the idea of everything not being ended, and them never getting any peace.

Ah. A tiny little piece of my troubled soul has now been put that tiny little bit more to rest. Thanks :D

And although I didn't like the way the book ended, I approve of it. If that makes sense.

*nods* Same thing as me, I think. XD

I rather liked the ending. Hated it when I first read it, but liked it when I thought about it. My real complaint about the last book was that I felt it went too fast, and tried to put in way too much. It could have been twice as long and maybe would have really started to get into the meat of what happened to everyone.

The cliffhanger ending... it's seriously irritating, but I don't think they would have ever been too happy afterwards anyway. Not that I advocate killing them all off or something but... after everything that happened, after all the revelations that came to light, I don't think they could be happy. And I don't think Jake and Cassie would ever have ended up together because they'd seen too much of each other, too much of things that were just so wrong. But... yeah. Totally wish it could have had a more wrapped up ending. But with the forcing them into another fight... can't see much of what else they could have done, you know? It's hard to settle back to reality after everything they'd been through.

XP Maybe the best thing about the last book is that it got us all into analysis/pissed mode. Kyah!

Now I'm scared that JKR is going to pull out a cliffhanger ending as well and justify it with that. Thanks :P

I don't think she'd be that ebil, although I'm still not placing any bets on Harry's survival rate. XP

Speaking of which, have you seen GoF yet? XD

[identity profile] pikachumaniac.livejournal.com 2005-11-18 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope! Not watching it until Thanksgiving weekend, but I'm not too fussed since what I'm really looking forward to is Rent. :3

I'm going to watch it with a friend of mine some time next week, and am currently on tetherhooks, knowing that I'n going to hate it but see it anyway. XD

I hear it's better than the last three, which I guess is an improvement. X_X But I saw a clip of it - the ferret scene? I didn't like it very much. *lesigh* I don't know why, but there was just something off about it that I couldn't quite place my finger on....

Sorshawolf liked it a lot, and someone else on my flist hated it. >_> Tied reviews, so far.

Well, I suppose it would never be enough for some of us. I have a feeling I'm one of those people, although the main reason why the last movie dissapointed me was because Lupin was like... a child molester or something. I wanted him *away* from Harry. FAR away. And Lupin's my second favorite character in the third book! It's very sad. *sigh*
