Animorphs, Tobias/Rachel, 'Every time I try to fly, I fall without my wings.'

"Hey." She's on top of a building. Alone. Or so she hopes. Thinks.

...She's pretty sure she's alone.

There's a strong wind. Tobias would grumble about fighting it to fly, if he were here. Maybe she could have held him close to her, stroked his feathers and talked him into being human for just a little snatch of time.

Maybe.

"I miss you." The wind steals her words and carries them away. Maybe it'll take them to someone who needs to hear it; maybe it'll blow over people who never knew Tobias.

She corrects herself, "We all do."

That doesn't make anything better.

"You--" Rachel stops, her words choked and punches the ground next to her. Her knuckles are skinned, and she sucks them without thinking, taking out of her mouth to try again, "You went down fighting. Like I always wanted to."

Her eyes are darker than the sky and she shifts forwards on the ledge, bare toes curling over the edge.

It's repetitive, but she says it anyway, tone softer than anyone could imagine it being, "I miss you."

Then she flings her arms open wide and leaps.

Rachel = Steph. Both blonde, fight-happy, die tragically, messed-up families and relationship problems.

Except Rachel's death is treated much, much better than Steph's.

I actually think this is the best drabble in the entire post. Tobias/Rachel is my canon OTP. Doomed and beautiful and painful in its inability to be as perfect as they deserve.

...I tossed in a side of Bruce/Jason, hope that's okay. XD Set before Steph died and Jay returned.

Batman doesn't quite trust Steph. Spoiler. Robin IV.

(A Robin by any other name is still a Robin.)

Tim finds that understandable. He never knew Jason, but he studied him. And he can see why Batman would look at Steph and see Jason's shadow stretched out behind her.

He never sees that.

He sees strength and beauty and joy and anger. Maybe that's what Bruce saw in Jason.

Maybe if Jason had kissed Bruce like Tim is kissing Steph now, Batman might understand. Maybe Jason did. Maybe that's why Batman refuses to understand this.

Maybe this'll end badly. Tim knows the risk he's taking. Steph knows, but Tim isn't sure she cares.

And when she's tugging at his t-shirt so impatiently, and kissing him like she's the sunshine Robins rarely see because they work during the night, Tim doesn't care either. He can't care at any other time either, not when it comes to her.

Loving her is a calculated risk. It's one he's chosen to take.

When she kisses him, Tim knows (with a guilty rush) that there's no calculation involved.

Batman would never understand (condone) that deliberate lack of forethought.

It only makes things worse that Jason (if he had lived) might.

Glad to have pleased. XD I swear, I didn't mean for Bruce/Jason to creep in there but I think that Jason is too attention-demanding to stay out of DC stories.
