DJ has ads too, but only on top of the actual journal. GJ has ads everywhere, so much that it's a problem to navigate and look at profile pages. I keep all my el-jay accounts at either paid or basic just because I really hate the way that ads interrupt the flow of a page and on GJ, it's especially bad because they're right smack in the userinfo.
I hated the idea of el-jay getting ads as well, for what it's worth. I'm generally in favor of being able to read stuff without interruptions -- I mean, you don't get ads in books, only magazines, and I think journaling services should be more like books than magazines, textual instead of visual.
