Rats deserting a sinking ship, anyone? Brad's out.
Brad, creator of livejournal, is leaving for Google because and SixApart might be looking for a buyer for their company.
You know, this actually might be why there hasn't been any response to the general outcry about the journal deletions, strikethrough being replaced by bold, etc. I mean, yes, fandom is making a huge stink but the creator of the site leaving is kind of bigger and definitely worse PR, overall. If everyone's too busy dealing with that to deal with fandom, then I can understand that -- though that still doesn't explain the idiotic comment screening or the fact that three of the four charities that got donations from the Permanent Account sale had ties to a Six Apart investor.
I don't think that I can start backing up my journal until I'm at uni, since it requires installing stuff, but here is a guide on how to do it. It'll let you transfer all your old entries to another journal, without having to do it by hand, which is incredibly time-saving.
brown_betty also has another useful entry on backing up LJ memories. In my case, I'm just going to go through them by hand and stick them up on my delicious account, I think.
At the same time, you can use Semagic to update multiple journals at once so as to maintain a nominal presence on LJ and test the waters of the other journaling sites.
If you want to keep up with people that are moving off LJ, try FeedReader for RSS purposes.
Edit:
brad has his own post about it, wherein he says that it's not SixApart's fault that he's bored and some other things.

I knew you'd need a little bit to think over the logic of that.

If you'd like a hand at backing up, I promise I wont read entries. If it's not so urgent then don't worry, but I thought I'd offer.
no subject
And nah, don't worry, I can back up perfectly well on my own. But thank you for the offer!

That you could save and burn to disk until you get back to uni.

And yay, sinfest icon! Whee! I love Percy to bits. XD *goes to change link while being patted on the head*

XD I only have one other Sinfest icon, but I rarely use it. (I got to when some uber-religious chick told me to get some cock last week, though!)

I wish I knew the truth behind the rumor about SixApart pulling out. I don't think it's likely, but even if it isn't, I want to know what started it.
Awwwwwww. I have a sinfest icon that's not loaded up here of the devil fanboy, who is my absolute favorite. (Argh, I remember that. I think I left you an F-wordful comment about her incredible stupidity and then never replied to your reply because I couldn't think of anything except how much I hated what she'd said.)

I wish I knew the truth too. My usual response to shit like this is "wait and see." We'll find out eventually, and it's not like I don't have a back up journal if I need it. (And I've seen plenty of non-fannish people going "what are you blabbing on about this time?" so there are people who will stick around 'cause they don't care.)
On the sinfest feed, they post up the occasional icon in the comments. I sort of want a devil one, because the devil is AWESOME.

And I am so totally impatient, I hate having to wait and see. Plus, I can't back up my journal because computer at home is still half-broken and computer at office won't let me install stuff, so I'm a wee bit worried. And my non-fandom friends are also rather "..." about the whole thing, but willing to RSS me to keep up.
Ahhhh. I make my own, usually, but those icons are cute too. And the devil isn't quite as cute as his fanboy, alas!

Most fannish people seem to be very "...meh" about the whole thing, so it still stands to be seen how much of fandom is really doing to pick up and leave when they're non-fannish friends aren't.
The two I have here I made on my own. XD The devil's just a pimp, though.

Thanks for these extra links on backing up.
Dude, the backing up LJ memories is a so major must for me, I think. Though, I don't plan on deleting this journal or transferring posts xD But, would be nice to have them in a "JUST IN CASE" lj decides that I've SOMEHOW done something to offend them @_@;
