Why?

Basic accounts can no longer be created.

In other words, you either have to face ads or you get a Paid account. Want to know what makes this worse?

They didn't announce it publicly. The only hint of it is in a comment to the news post.

Basically, that means that I am OUT of el-jay RPing unless I recycle an old journal because I sure as hell refuse to create a Plus account when it fucks over everything so much and when they PROMISED it would never happen.

iJay's got ads, yeah, but at least they're honest about it. This was x-posted from my iJay (fickle), which is a Permanent Account. I don't usually x-post but in this case, I definitely consider it worth it.

If you have no clue what I'm talking about, click here for a helpful comment that shows all the ultra-cool v-gifts that Russian users have.

Poison and grenades, wow! Perfect for a country with civil unrest.

I actually think the poison is kinda cool. It's emo-tastic. But it seems weird that if it's not appopriate for the US brand of livejournal, it's okay for Russian livejournal and that el-jay would let their trademark be diluted like that anyway.

The penguin returns to Ctrl+Alt+Dlt!

Penguin belongs to the Linux-user who rarely appears in the strip but lives in their house and has a door with electric wiring. They're my two favorite characters in the entire strip.

...And yes, I do think that's worth making an entire post about. XD

But for the benefit of the people on my flist who like a little more news with their posts, Pepsi Sponsored stuff on LJ is gone. No more mood themes, no more v-gifts and no more layouts. *cheers*

Next Saturday, I'll be flying back to the States. And I still need to send out postcards. Egads.

LJ's got another announcement post over at [livejournal.com profile] lj_biz. As opposed to [livejournal.com profile] news, as usual.

Also, I know it's not important in the grand scheme of things, but has anyone been told yet why deleted usernames are bold instead of struck through? My curiosity, it's killing me!

Frankly, LJ already apologized and sounded sincere about it in May. Then this latest round of idiocy happened. I'm not too keen on sticking around for it to happen a third time.

If you've got a paid account, permanent account or used to have one of those, go here to answer a few questions about why and be counted amongst those people who are no longer to give LJ or 6A their cash to play with. I already filled it out -- if you aren't sure about your payment history, check it out here. Your info about when your journal was created and when the paid account expires is in your userinfo.

And finally, on a non-LJ but still Internet freedom issue, AT&T censors Pearl Jam's live Webcast concert so that the lines “George Bush, leave this world alone” and “George Bush find yourself another home” were muted out of the song.

Brad, creator of livejournal, is leaving for Google because and SixApart might be looking for a buyer for their company.

You know, this actually might be why there hasn't been any response to the general outcry about the journal deletions, strikethrough being replaced by bold, etc. I mean, yes, fandom is making a huge stink but the creator of the site leaving is kind of bigger and definitely worse PR, overall. If everyone's too busy dealing with that to deal with fandom, then I can understand that -- though that still doesn't explain the idiotic comment screening or the fact that three of the four charities that got donations from the Permanent Account sale had ties to a Six Apart investor.

I don't think that I can start backing up my journal until I'm at uni, since it requires installing stuff, but here is a guide on how to do it. It'll let you transfer all your old entries to another journal, without having to do it by hand, which is incredibly time-saving. [livejournal.com profile] brown_betty also has another useful entry on backing up LJ memories. In my case, I'm just going to go through them by hand and stick them up on my delicious account, I think.

At the same time, you can use Semagic to update multiple journals at once so as to maintain a nominal presence on LJ and test the waters of the other journaling sites.

If you want to keep up with people that are moving off LJ, try FeedReader for RSS purposes.

Edit: [livejournal.com profile] brad has his own post about it, wherein he says that it's not SixApart's fault that he's bored and some other things.

If anyone wants a coveted JournalFen account for lj migration purposes, check out [livejournal.com profile] leavin_eljay.

Hint: I'd suggest being really polite if you ask for any accounts.

[Poll #1033280]

I didn't want to move after Strikethrough '07. My reasoning was that LJ had messed up, but they'd apologize, fix the problem, and not do it again.

Obviously, I was wrong.

Right now, I have a JournalFen account, a lostjournal account, and a Deadjournal account.

The deadjournal account has chronicles of my emo teen years and apart from getting a paid account which would only get me 24 invite codes at the most to give out, I think it's highly unlikely that my flist would be able to migrate over there, or would want to.

Lostjournal, I've never used and don't care too much about. I also have no idea what their policies are, so I doubt that I'm going to start using that one either. Username: illusion

JournalFen, I use mostly for Fandom Wank. You need a paid account to get journals for other people, but there aren't any limits on how many accounts you can have made, so I'm seriously thinking about getting a paid account there. Generally speaking, if they're willing to host Fandom Wank, I'd assume that they're willing to host anything that isn't actually getting DMCA notices sent to them. And their servers are robust. XDDDDD Username: damienraptore

Insanejournal, I headed to check out just because a lot of my flist was talking about it and the admin laid down clear rules on what's okay and what isn't. I started to create an account, was going to snag fickle_deity or just fickle but put Damien in just because I thought that it would say it was taken, found out it wasn't, and now that's my account. Though I'm considering getting a paid account there to get rid of the ads, and if I do that, I might switch to one called Fickle instead since more of my flist calls me that than anything else. Not sure. Username: Damien

At any rate, if I leave, most of my RP journals are going to be deleted just for the sake of me doing the survey that asks WHY I'm leaving. I've got enough RP journals to spend an entire month sending them one deleted journal per day with a complaint about LJ's incredibly stupid customer service skills.

I've got a paid account until December. I'm staying at least that long, even if only to complain. After that, all bets are off.

Oh, and if anyone actually needs pictures of boys or girls or whatevers kissing as a reward for taking that poll, drop me a comment and I'll supply something. ♥

[livejournal.com profile] ponderosa121's journal was deleted by LJ for having illegal content.

Why is her name bold? Because LJ has apparently suddenly decided that bolding names instead of striking them through is less noticeable and will kill the rallying cry of "Strikethrough '07". Yeah fucking right.

[livejournal.com profile] elaboration has also been deleted, and she had a completely flocked journal.

I have no idea what [livejournal.com profile] elaboration had on her journal but [livejournal.com profile] ponderosa121 was a fantastic Gundam Wing fanartist and did a gorgeous bit of artwork for Trowa/Une. I know she was also in the FMA fandom and HP fandom, both of which slide towards the underage thing, but these are fictional characters being drawn or written about. FICTION.

LJ must have lost its bloody mind if it thinks that this new bolding tactic is so subtle that fandom will be collectively blind to it.

If you want more links on what's going here, try here, here, and complain to LJ here.
