fickle: (politics: stop censorship)

LJ, SA and a grim bit of reality.

LJ's got another announcement post over at [livejournal.com profile] lj_biz. As opposed to [livejournal.com profile] news, as usual.

Also, I know it's not important in the grand scheme of things, but has anyone been told yet why deleted usernames are bold instead of struck through? My curiosity, it's killing me!

Frankly, LJ already apologized and sounded sincere about it in May. Then this latest round of idiocy happened. I'm not too keen on sticking around for it to happen a third time.

If you've got a paid account, permanent account or used to have one of those, go here to answer a few questions about why and be counted amongst those people who are no longer to give LJ or 6A their cash to play with. I already filled it out -- if you aren't sure about your payment history, check it out here. Your info about when your journal was created and when the paid account expires is in your userinfo.

And finally, on a non-LJ but still Internet freedom issue, AT&T censors Pearl Jam's live Webcast concert so that the lines “George Bush, leave this world alone” and “George Bush find yourself another home” were muted out of the song.

baaza?

WTF

[identity profile] fickle-goddess.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I KNOW.

This is fucking stupid. I am so sick of companies taking it upon themseves to decide what's fit for the public to experience and what isn't.

[identity profile] a-white-rain.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
How about they focus on important things?

[identity profile] fickle-goddess.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Like making safer toys (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070814/ap_on_bi_ge/toy_recall)?

[identity profile] fickle-goddess.livejournal.com 2007-08-15 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
Or, alternatively, free trade versus fair trade, upping the minimum wage, equal rights hiring policies and sensitivity training for workplace politics.

Just a few thoughts, there.

[identity profile] a-white-rain.livejournal.com 2007-08-15 11:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yes.

Logic hurts people.

Psssh. Wimp :P

Re: ur intarweb freedomz, the last bit isn't atypical. Even just mentions of the word "war" have been cut from radio edits. Weird that they'd do it during a live concert, but otherwise not unprecedented.

[identity profile] fickle-goddess.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
...Bizarre. I know that the American Idiot song by Green Day has the words 'faggot' and 'mindfuck' edited out of it, but that's only the MTV version, as far as I know. I think it plays normally on Kerrang.

D! Don't go! ;_; Insanejournal's layout makes me cringe and want to claw my eyes out. I refuse to get a journal there.

Making her mine. All mine! Bwahahahaha!

[identity profile] ryuutchi.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait. How did you do that? ::pokes at the commenty-thing::

[identity profile] ryuutchi.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, dammit, Will, I don't WANT to get an IJ. The layout is PAINFUL. ;_; I hear the owner listens to people. Tell him to make it not look so hurty and I might consider moving.

1) Open ID

2) I currently use Lynx scheme (text only) but there are greasemonkey scripts and the owner's also been taking feedback about the site scheme.

3) I wait patiently for Scribbilt.com

4) More maniacal laughter.

[identity profile] ryuutchi.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
1) ... That takes effort.

2) I think I'll wait until someone gives him a better site design, then. Cause I don't wanna deal with text only OR the current design.

3) I keep hearing about that, but isn't it based somewhere where the laws on obscenity are even more stringent?

4) Blech. Most of my flist isn't fannish-- that's the problem. There's only a handful of people who are leaving, but I don't wanna lose those people. ;_; You jerk. Don't mock my pain.

[identity profile] fickle-goddess.livejournal.com 2007-08-15 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
1) Actually, it seems pretty easy to use! I just tried it out as a response to Willow's comment, it sent me to a page on IJ, and I clicked a button and that was it. XD Nifty!

2) There are lots and lots of design options!

3) Based in Canada, but [livejournal.com profile] twocorpses has been talking about those laws a lot.

4) Same here, actually. Though I also have friends who have already relocated to IJ as they got fed up with LJ even before I did. XD

[identity profile] ryuutchi.livejournal.com 2007-08-15 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
1) I repeat. Effort.
2) But orange and ugly!
3) I thought Canadian laws were worse about possible obscenity than American?
4) See? Your friends are staying! Staaaaay with meeeeee.

[identity profile] fickle-goddess.livejournal.com 2007-08-16 11:44 am (UTC)(link)
1) Hardly any!
2) They're not all orange! There's a pretty bishie one, actually :P
3) Me too. But again, the person in charge has had a lot of posts about it, so check her journal if you want the full scoop. XD
4) Not all of them are staying! And LJ's tendency to be all 'read my mind, minions!' is way too nerve-wrecking. Especially with the latest bit of news about getting warnings for artwork that's already deleted (http://teh-kittykat.insanejournal.com/14965.html) and clarifying ages no longer being enough (http://teh-kittykat.insanejournal.com/14965.html).

It's just way too "...I am not a psychic, I don't even play one on the Internet!"

*♥ you and your poor dead brain, though!*

[identity profile] fickle-goddess.livejournal.com 2007-08-15 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
There are plenty of different layouts! Really. ♥ Like, I obsessively use Dystopia on el-jay, just because I heart vertical navigation schemes without drop down bars and dark colored backgrounds.

And on IJ, I forgot what I use, but it's also vertical. *tempts to the dark crazy side* XD

[identity profile] ryuutchi.livejournal.com 2007-08-15 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
But it's gray and orange and ugly. And also the whole insane theme makes me twitch. (Bloody call it a "paid account"! That's what it is.)

Stay here and love me.

[identity profile] fickle-goddess.livejournal.com 2007-08-16 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
Not all the designs. *pouts* And awwww. I don't really mind it, seeing as I can still figure out what stuff is. Deadjournal's the WORST for that, I have to hover over links to figure out what they're talking about if I want to update my journal there. And since DJ was my first ever journaling site, I'm used to weirdness with names.

I love you! I just don't love LJ.

[identity profile] xinda.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
They totally do a lot of pick-and-choose on what gets censored and what doesn't - and what's allowed in one song and what's not allowed in another - even if it's the same context and same station. A song I heard recently took out a sentence that has the word "suicidal" or "suicide" in it -

You're way too beautiful girl
That's why it'll never work
You'll have me suicidal, suicidal
When you say it's over
Damn all these beautiful girls
They only wanna do your dirt
They'll have you suicidal, suicidal
When they say it's over

Mmmm.... and yeah, I think it's WTF that they censor the Bush thing - because, really... uh... >.> :X

[identity profile] fickle-goddess.livejournal.com 2007-08-15 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
OH MY GOD! That song was on TV this morning! *was flipping through channels while waiting for father to get ready*

...Sean Kingston or something? I think.

And damn, that's ridiculous. I wonder what they do for songs like "Hold On" by Good Charlotte, then?

[identity profile] daemonsadvocate.livejournal.com 2007-08-15 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
...woah. o.O'' perhaps priorities are a bit off? Since when did companies start loving the big GB. You don't need a Chinese government backed agency to sort through the media and half the net blocking things, you just need to instill fear and doubt. It's quite bad when this is being done to your own population eh?

I think suicide and the like is covered by a different set of laws. The media censorship one comes through a bit more strongly ^^.

[identity profile] fickle-goddess.livejournal.com 2007-08-16 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea but it bloody well sucks. Remind me never to hook up with AT&T. EVER.

[identity profile] xindanobodie.livejournal.com 2007-10-27 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
YUP!

But yeah. Who knows.

That's what bothers me so much. Is on the -same channel- they will edit something during one song, but not the next. I get, sometimes, for different channels - whether it makes "sense" or not. But yeah.
