Whatever you're doing right now, stop. Go read Little Brother instead.

Little Brother is the best book I've read all year. This would have more meaning if it wasn't the start of the year, so let me rephrase that. Little Brother might be the most awesome book that I could possibly read this year.

There's an excellent summary of the book here, so I'm not going to hash over the book. Instead, I'm going to give you bullet points as to WHY you should read it.

  • The author references our culture. Flashmobs, Linux distros, game systems being cheap but the games expensive, livejournal, Flickr, everything. And he gets it right! You've seen what happened when the media tried talking about Anonymous versus Scientology. This guy actually manages to create a believable 17-year-old narrator.
  • It's about Homeland Security and what happens when safety trumps freedom. The title's a homage to 'Big Brother' but unlike 1984, this book is set in our times. Modern times. It's much easier to get sucked into this book because the protagonist is our age and deals with our tech, instead of being an adult with a forbidden love affair.
  • On that note, the book deals with the generation gap and how adults are more likely to buy into the scare tactics of the media. But it doesn't present all adults as rigorously inflexible. There are good guys amongst the grown-ups, and bad guys amongst the kids, and the way that he manages to make moral ambiguity and self-righteousness a major theme of the novel is amazing.
  • Awesome female chars. There's not just the standard love interest and the best friend chick, but also female chars with authority, female chars who are bad guys, and female chars who rock the geek world. They're depicted as being as much a part of the world as the male protag is, and the author's Net-savvy enough to even have the protag be wary of one girl that IMs him because the protag knows how many guys like pretending to be girls online.
  • Race issues! It's a bit of a throw away in that it's not a major theme of the book, but that's part of what makes the sudden discussion of them so fantastic to me. There's a quick convo between the protag and a friend of his about how the friend will suffer more if they're caught, and the protag acknowledges that yes, brown people have the scales balanced against them. It's a tiny little thing, not a major part of the book, but oh, how fantastic it is to se it acknowledged as a part of real life instead of glossed over or forgotten about.
  • Neil Gaiman, Scott Westerfeld, Brian K Vaughn, and I love it. I fully intend on buying copies IRL and making my friends read them. Since most of you are lucky enough to not live near me, I'm instead devoting the entirety of this post to trying to convince you to read it.

You know what else is awesome? The author himself and his thoughts on ebooks and sharing books/music online. His explanation for why he gives his books away for free online is quoted below, because it's just said so well that any attempt on my part to sum it up would pale in comparison to his original words.

I recently saw Neil Gaiman give a talk at which someone asked him how he felt about piracy of his books. He said, "Hands up in the audience if you discovered your favorite writer for free -- because someone loaned you a copy, or because someone gave it to you? Now, hands up if you found your favorite writer by walking into a store and plunking down cash." Overwhelmingly, the audience said that they'd discovered their favorite writers for free, on a loan or as a gift. When it comes to my favorite writers, there's no boundaries: I'll buy every book they publish, just to own it (sometimes I buy two or three, to give away to friends who must read those books). I pay to see them live. I buy t-shirts with their book-covers on them. I'm a customer for life.

Neil went on to say that... )

Love him, read the book, and spread word of the book around as much as you can. This guy is one of us. He talks about our technology, he writes about our world, and he's good at it. He's a geek to the core, and one who doesn't back down from tackling politics head-on. I'd fangirl about it more, but I'm going to see if he's written anything else.

[livejournal.com profile] sickficfest is a comm that's centered around writing bad people doing very bad things.

Surely you can see why I'd be interested.

It's accepting prompts until the end of September, the prompts will be claimed during October and the actual fics will only be posted in February. How can I wait that long?!

If you don't have the time or patience to write, go submit prompts here anyway because I want to write and so far, there are only two fandoms that I could possibly write for. And I'm getting a little carried away with submitting prompts myself at the moment anyway.

Remember my post about the Pretty Bird Woman Shelter and how it needed donations to rebuild after having been burned down? [livejournal.com profile] ceresi just posted about it again but this time, there's a twist. The following two paragraphs are taken directly from her post.

- [livejournal.com profile] stonedtodeath is offering to donate one cent per word to the Pretty Bird Woman House. I think she's into bandslash and SPN, so if those are your fandoms and you've been looking for a way to donate, check out her post here.

- [livejournal.com profile] mickeym is offering to write in exchange for donations. I can tell she's into SPN by the header of her journal, haha (mmmm, boys), so if that's your thing, go! Check out her post here.

I've now been inspired to do the same. This is my offer to donate on the behalf of other people who are low on cash but high on talent/creativity/enthusiasm.

Write me something and I'll donate a cent per word to the Pretty Bird Women House and post a screencap of a receipt that'll look like this so that'll you have some form of tangible proof of having done a good deed.

Fandoms that I heart are:

Animorphs, Archie Comics, Batman/DC*, Batman Beyond, Big Wolf on Campus, Bruno and Boots, Chrestomanci, Discworld, Fables, Good Omens, Gravitation, Greek Mythology, Gundam Wing, Harry Potter, Hercules (Disney), Mighty Ducks, Mulan (Disney), Othello (the manga), Petshop of Horrors, Pokemon, Sailor Moon season R, Smallville, Spiderman, Stick It, Sweet Valley, The Authority, Yu-Gi-Oh.

See? Plenty of options. And if you still want to make a donation through me but can't write for any of those fandoms, drop me a comment with what you can write for and I'll choose something. I really want to get as many people as possible involved in this somehow.

The fundraiser ends on the 31st of Jan, so you can drop in any time before then unless I run out of money before then. To keep track of how donations from this post are going, I'll be editing this every time someone contributes. Please feel free to link to this post in your own journal or spread it wherever you want.

Total:

2415 / 7000 words. 63% done, 44.15 dollars contributed!

First of all, thank you so much for signing up for one of my fandoms. And secondly, I'm sorry if any of my requests confused you, I know that I have a tendency to fall for the weirdest characters or pairings. XD

So, just a few basic things before I go into more detail -- I am definitely a fan of slash, I like fics that are dark and self-destructive or give you a really tight feel for what a particular character is like. I am definitely very hard to squick whether with sex, gore or violence.

Now down to the details of my requests. )

In conclusion, if those details are confusing or difficult to deal with, please don't worry about them and write whatever you feel capable of doing. And thank you in advance!

Oh, and if you want examples of fics/author that I especially love, [livejournal.com profile] ceresi is especially awesome - there's a Tobias/Jake (Animorphs) that I cannot get enough of mostly for the writing style, and a Rachel drabble that breaks my heart every time. By other authors, this Regulus/Remus fic is a perfect example of the dark/twisted/conflicted/using themes that I love, and this Narcissa/Lily fic is gorgeously-written and dark as Black blood.

...Hopefully, that's enough recs and at least some of them fit whatever fandoms you're in!
fickle: (politics: gay people are everywhere)
So, as a result of the Dumbledore thing, I found out that Roger/Thom is canon (Alanna the Lionness series) which is also confirmed by the author here, that Warren Ellis doesn't get why it took so long for people to realize that Midnighter/Apollo IS canon and that Hugh Laurie, House's actor, would be willing to do a House/Wilson plot. Also, Hugh Laurie sounds like Blackadder. Worrying, that.

Oh yeah. Definitely a good time to be a slasher. Canon everywhere looks favorably upon us!

I am happy. ♥ I love it when fandom AND canon make me happy.

And to share the happiness, here's a meme I snagged from [livejournal.com profile] cairnsy:

For the first three people that reply to me and re-post this challenge, I will send you something. It will be random and awesome, or perhaps just lame. Whatever it is, I promise that I will get it to you in 365 days or fewer.

The only thing you need to do in order to participate is to be one of the first three to reply to this, AND post this very same thing on YOUR LiveJournal - cause it's fun to give people stuff.

And I'll be watchin' my f-list to make sure you re-post! Because I am a stalker.

To counteract that happiness, here's a meme from [livejournal.com profile] a_white_rain who is made of pure crack and making me read Tokyo Babylon and cheering on my Slade/Terra and Terra/Raven love:

Name three fics you think I will never, ever, ever write. In return, I will attempt to write a snippet of one of them.

Anyone who dares asks for three bits of thiefshipping will SUFFER, I swear it. ^_~ [livejournal.com profile] fan_dancer, have yourself a ball with this :P

Edit: Auction of Wonder Woman Art with proceeds going to domestic violence shelters. The world is made of pure WIN at the moment. ♥

The one who seduced you and fucked you over and broke your heart in a million pieces and laughed about it:

Animorphs. OH GOD THAT ENDING. It kills me every time. There is no way for me to get over it, even though I understand it. My aunt complained about buying me the books because they were stacked in the 4 to 5-year-old reading section, but I don't give a damn. Those books were, are, will always be awesome.

Watch this.

It's one of the most fantastic speeches that I've ever heard, not just about everything that Bush has done, but also about how the American people chose to let him get away it. Context is that Alan Shore is an attorney whose secretary is on trial for tax evasion as a form of political protest.

Transcript of the speech.

Alan Shore: When the weapons of mass destruction thing turned out to be not true, I expected the American people to rise up. Ha! They didn’t.

Then, when the Abu Ghraib torture thing surfaced and it was revealed that our government participated in rendition, a practice where we kidnap people and turn them over to regimes who specialize in torture, I was sure then the American people would be heard from. We stood mute.

Then came the news that we jailed thousands of so-called terrorists suspects, locked them up without the right to a trial or even the right to confront their accusers. Certainly, we would never stand for that. We did.

And now, it’s been discovered the executive branch has been conducting massive, illegal, domestic surveillance on its own citizens. You and me. And I at least consoled myself that finally, finally the American people will have had enough. Evidentially, we haven’t.

In fact, if the people of this country have spoken, the message is we’re okay with it all. Torture, warrantless search and seizure, illegal wiretappings, prison without a fair trial - or any trial, war on false pretenses. We, as a citizenry, are apparently not offended.

There are no demonstrations on college campuses. In fact, there’s no clear indication that young people seem to notice.

Well, Melissa Hughes noticed. Now, you might think, instead of withholding her taxes, she could have protested the old fashioned way. Made a placard and demonstrated at a Presidential or Vice-Presidential appearance, but we’ve lost the right to that as well. The Secret Service can now declare free speech zones to contain, control and, in effect, criminalize protest.

Stop for a second and try to fathom that.

At a presidential rally, parade or appearance, if you have on a supportive t-shirt, you can be there. If you are wearing or carrying something in protest, you can be removed.

This, in the United States of America. This in the United States of America. Is Melissa Hughes the only one embarrassed?

Continued transcript of the speech. )

I adore that speech. I adore him. I have to admit, I've only watched one ep of the show but watching him soapbox on YouTube is FANTASTIC.

LJ's got another announcement post over at [livejournal.com profile] lj_biz. As opposed to [livejournal.com profile] news, as usual.

Also, I know it's not important in the grand scheme of things, but has anyone been told yet why deleted usernames are bold instead of struck through? My curiosity, it's killing me!

Frankly, LJ already apologized and sounded sincere about it in May. Then this latest round of idiocy happened. I'm not too keen on sticking around for it to happen a third time.

If you've got a paid account, permanent account or used to have one of those, go here to answer a few questions about why and be counted amongst those people who are no longer to give LJ or 6A their cash to play with. I already filled it out -- if you aren't sure about your payment history, check it out here. Your info about when your journal was created and when the paid account expires is in your userinfo.

And finally, on a non-LJ but still Internet freedom issue, AT&T censors Pearl Jam's live Webcast concert so that the lines “George Bush, leave this world alone” and “George Bush find yourself another home” were muted out of the song.
fickle: (politics: stop censorship)
[livejournal.com profile] ponderosa121's journal was deleted by LJ for having illegal content.

Why is her name bold? Because LJ has apparently suddenly decided that bolding names instead of striking them through is less noticeable and will kill the rallying cry of "Strikethrough '07". Yeah fucking right.

[livejournal.com profile] elaboration has also been deleted, and she had a completely flocked journal.

I have no idea what [livejournal.com profile] elaboration had on her journal but [livejournal.com profile] ponderosa121 was a fantastic Gundam Wing fanartist and did a gorgeous bit of artwork for Trowa/Une. I know she was also in the FMA fandom and HP fandom, both of which slide towards the underage thing, but these are fictional characters being drawn or written about. FICTION.

LJ must have lost its bloody mind if it thinks that this new bolding tactic is so subtle that fandom will be collectively blind to it.

If you want more links on what's going here, try here, here, and complain to LJ here.

Link of the Day: Fox News Finds Out About 4Chan. FEAR THE INTERNET TERRORISTS!

For those of you who don't know the details, that was actually 420chan, not 4Chan, which is apparently quite different but if you Google 4Chan, you'll see exactly how stupid it is. Also, the guy who's talking about his MySpace having been hacked? Was a member, tried to get them to target a chick that he didn't like, got mocked and voila, revenge! Sort of, anyway. XD

Apart from there, here's some fandom-type stuff.

First of all, International Blog Against Racism week starts next Monday on the 6th August. I'm probably going to be taking part, so watch out for me suddenly blogging a lot about what it means to be Sri Lankan in Austria, Sri Lankan in America and an expatriate Sri Lankan in Sri Lanka. It might result in me reopening the offer to make flag icons, as well.

Secondly, I watched the starting ep of the YGO Capsule Monsters thing today. Alexander is hot, Jou's a spaz (still) and the fact that this season will be lacking in Seto, Ryuuji and Mai mean that I'm totally unwilling to watch it except for the Alexander-the-Evil bits.

Thirdly, IalsomighthavewatchedalittleYGOGX. BY ACCIDENT, OKAY! But Aster Phoenix is kind of hot. Like a younger Pegasus.

Fourthly, there is no third point. Really. Ignore it.

Fifthly, I'm scheduled to give a half-hour presentation on my summer internship to the Nuclear Power Engineering Section on the 27th August and am just a wee bit nervous at that idea. I haven't even started making a slideshow yet! But I will be strong. And do well.

Sixthly, nobody on my flist said that they haven't read HP yet. Again, if you haven't read the book and are spoiler-phobic, comment! It's been long enough that I don't feel the need to keep spoilers behind cuts unless there actually is someone on my flist who is still behind the times.

OMG! I just went to the link again and the journal has been deleted! Do you think that means the spoilers were real and the journal got deleted for posting copyrighted material before it was even released, or did the ontd_trash journal owners delete it to give the scanned pages more street cred?

...If those spoilers (actual scanned pages from the book, supposedly) were real, I will fucking laugh at how awful JKR's writing has gotten. I really, really will. XD And then I'll curse the 20 Euros I spent buying that piece of trash.

No charges pressed!

I have to admit, I really love the idea of a guy defending his ex-girlfriend's privacy by throwing a can of baked beans at a reporter.

Of course, I'm also one of those people who think that celebrities and their lives aren't interesting in the least and the paparazzi should just back off already, but still, Hugh Grant managed to both amuse me and make me feel vaguely proud of him for standing up for his ex.

...Please note, throwing a baked bean can at a reporter for trying to spy on your ex-girlfriend is different to spitting on one for trying to take a photograph of you. I'm still disgusted with Avril Lavgine for the latter, but I have to admit, Hugh Grant's coming off as pretty chivalrous in my eyes right now.

I'm always weirdly pleased when people stand up for each other. If nothing else, lj strikethrough '07 was awesome because of how quickly the el-jay users banded together to coordinate things like keeping track of deleted journals/comms, spreading the word, starting up protest memes, switching userpics, etc. Newsies has a special place in my heart because it taps into the 'people really can do good together!' idea that I not-so-secretly love, especially because I think it's so unrealistic.

Oh, and a note on userpics -- I didn't change mine for the strikethrough protests, and I rarely do change mine to jump on bandwagons, but I do think that userpics are an effective way of getting a message across. Meaning that if people want to make/use icons about strikethrough '07, I think they should go right ahead.

On el-jay, they're the equivalent of someone's t-shirt to me. If I see a political icon, I react to it the same way I would if they were wearing a political t-shirt, either with a mental sigh or by making a casual comment like 'nice t-shirt' or 'icon love!', depending on the situaton.

If I had more of an interest in how societies work (or, alternatively, more time!), I'd probably spin off onto a tangent about how my flist is like a microsm of el-jay. There are the people who are still wary of Six Apart, the people who are backlashing into being anti-fandom, the people who think they're safe now and it's over, and the people who are completely indifferent to it.

I probably fall in the category of 'still wary', just because as long as I have a paid account, livejournal remains a product to me. If I buy a book, I expect it to still have all its pages, not have some ripped out for having inappropriate material. If I'm given a new book by a friend, fresh from the bookshop, and it's missing pages, then I'd complain to the bookshop or the company that printed the book (obviously not the friend's fault). If I'm given a second-hand book by someone, then fine, it's a freebie and I know it's going to be used already so no complaining about its quality.

Please note, I'm not saying that free users don't have the right to complain about changes they dislike to livejournal, but my point is that if Six Apart wants to run livejournal like a business, then they need to listen to their customers.

In this case, they're doing that a little late, but they are listening, so I'm pleased with them for that but still definitely wary. Especially because of the rumors that they're thinking about becoming an IPO.

...And wow, this entry rambled. In conclusion, have some bullet points!

  1. Hugh Grant is awesome for defending his ex-girlfriend.
  2. People are awesome when they look out for each other.
  3. Userpics do matter.
  4. My flist is very diverse.
  5. Six Apart needs a better PR department, if nothing else.
  6. Passion is ♥.
  7. Apathy doesn't just kill. Apathy kills excruciatingly slowly.
fickle: (fickle: springtime of youth!)
First of all, sorry about not replying to comments, I have only very little Net time at home so I'm going to respond to comments when I have more time to reply instead of just read.

Secondly, signed a lease for an apartment-type deal. It's the top floor of a house, so it has a bedroom, a study and a bathroom with a little bit of roof that's like a terrace where I can sun myself. The kitchen is on the ground floor but I'll have the house to myself between the 10th July and 11th August since the owner and her daughter will be away on holiday.

Internet-wise, which is the most important thing, she has Chello and unlimited Internet, but she doesn't have it set up for wireless yet. One of us is going to need to buy a wireless router so that I can get Net access -- assuming I move in on Monday as scheduled, I should have the wireless Net up and running by Tuesday. I still won't be around as much as I am during the uni year, since I'll be working most of the day but the weekends will definitely be my time for catching up on Net stuff!

Transport-wise, there's a bus that takes about ten minutes to get to Kagrannerplatz, and then I can take the U-Bahn from there to the UN. So possibly about twenty minutes to get to work, which starts at 8:30, meaning I should wake up around 7:30 in order to have time to shower, eat breakfast, get dressed, etc.

Parents are jointly giving me a lump sum of 2,500 Euros for my 21st birthday present (birthday is 10th July), and I'm supposed to pay rent and all other expenses over the summer from that. Rent for that place was originally 500 per month but I got her down to 350 instead, thankfully. Calculations for the next three months are under the cut.

Fickle's math-fu is put to the test! )

Also, there's another protest-meme about writing sexy drabbles daily as a way of standing up for el-jay. Don't think that I'll be able to get steady enough access to actually do that until Tuesday, but I'm tempted to try. Flist, any thoughts?

[Poll #994544]

Back up your journal if you've got the time. If I get booted from here, expect to see me hanging out at JournalFen or DeadJournal again. GreatestJournal = haaaaaaaaaaate because of all the ads everywhere, but journalfen is hard to get accounts for (unless you're a paid user who can get free accounts created and unfortunately, I'm still not allowed to buy stuff online otherwise I'd upgrade my account over there to a paid one) and deadjournal still works off the account code system, unfortunately.

Oh, and anyone with any interest at all in fandom or letting fandom have a safe space on el-jay should join Fandom Counts. You don't need to friend it, there are zero entries there, it's just a quick way of showing how many of the journals on el-jay are fandom related.

The deletions aren'ta specific targeting of fandom but fandom journals are getting caught in the targets and damnit, I'm annoyed that [livejournal.com profile] pornish_pixies got deleted because I had a great Regulus/Remus fic in my memories that was posted there and now I can't remember the author or anything that would let me find it again, just that the writing style reminded me of Wilde. When I've got the Net time, I'll join it with all my multiple RP journals as well.

Link of the Day: Yu-Gi-Oh Online!

Want to watch Yu-Gi-Oh but too broke to buy the eps and can't find torrents for the eps you want or lacking in the time to download them? Hit the above link! They have most of the eps from all the season online, they load quickly enough that you can watch it while it's loading with minimal pauses (for me, anyway), and the quality is pretty good. XD Dub, though, for those people who care about the difference between the two.

Personally, I prefer the manga to the anime, but Ryuuji's cheerleaders always crack me up and you can never have too many Marik's crotch-shots. Jou in a dog suit is pretty hilarious as well, and something Savior mentioned recently made me want to watch Mai's backstory again. *needs to find which ep that is, though*

Favorite eps, personally, are 46&47, because those are the ones where Ryuuji shows up, 76 because it has Ryuuji attacking people via the use of dice, 96 & 96 because those are when Marik and Bakura duel, 106 & 107 where Ryuuji, Honda and Shizuka all duel in a trio, 153-155 because it's got kickass evil!Mai, and 194&195 because it has Seto versus Siegfried. XD I also like some of the Pegsy eps, but I can't find episode summaries for them to figure out which numbers those are.

Welcome to the Yu-Gi-Oh Anti-Hate Fest! Let's keep the fandom alive and kicking through writing drabbles or making icons, because let's face it, celebrating the reasons you love a fandom is way more productive than griping about it or the other people in it. Drabbles and icons last, and you can show them off proudly -- anon comments don't, and negativity is toxic anyway.

The rules of participation are simple!

If you're signing up to create, then just drop your username along with a line or two about if you do fic or icons or both, and which chars or pairings you like especially. If you're making a request, either comment in response to someone that you know can write what you want, or drop a comment of your own, stating what you're asking for, and whoever comes across it can fill out your request. Multiple responses to one request are awesome, so feel free to reply to a request even if someone else already has.

All ratings, all pairings, and all characters welcome, as long as it has to do to with Yu-Gi-Oh. Any author or graphic maker who wants to play is more than welcome to jump in!

Also, if you've been recently been friended by someone you don't want to have anything to do with, the ban_set command is your friend since it'll stop them displaying on your 'Friend Of' list.

Spoilers for Naruto manga, obviously, specifically Shikamaru and Asuma-related stuff, but anyone on my flist who'd actually care about spoilers probably already knows what happpened.

Would you like some historical accuracy with your whining? )

Laptop died. Snark picks up again at the battle where Patroclus dresss up like his gay lover.

Damn this for making me lose track of my numbering system. )

[livejournal.com profile] mirrored_echo just had to leave to make sure she got to class tomorrow so the rest of it is done on my own.

Epic whining. )

First time I saw the movie in a theatre, I counted 34 errors on my own through the entire movie. Now, only snarking maybe half of it, I managed to rack up 37 errors with [livejournal.com profile] mirrored_echo snarking all except the last 35 minutes with me.

Amazing.
