Link of the Day: God Gap Narrows.

The above link'll take you an article on the recent voting trends and an analysis of it.

I'm not going to say too much about it because my inbox is flooded with comments I should be answering instead of making posts but basically, this last election was like Xmas coming early for me. Especially the abortion ban in South Dakota being overturned.

Link of the Day: Book Art.

So, Willow linked me to the above during an IM convo and it totally took my breath away. I love books in general and usually hate to see them mutilated but in this case, I think that it was very much worth it.

Apart from that, the Mai journal for [livejournal.com profile] ygo_sci_fi is driving me nuts. I worked through some tutorials on black-whiting pics, and ended up making a new banner and default icon, but I can't get the header image to line up with the top of the page. The journal is Swan Song and if anyone can figure out what I'm doing wrong, I'll be much obliged. The layout style is flexible squares, and it's my first time using it.

Link of the Day: Gay On The Range.

So, you all know about the Harlequin romance manga, the ones printed in pink and purple pink that fool innocent yaoi fangirls into thinking that they're actually boy's love manga, right?

Here's shocking news for you: Before boy's love manga, there were trashy gay romance novels with titles like The Family Jewels, A Few Of The Boys and Fruit Punch.

Now I know what I want for Christmas.

Also, on a purely personal note, Dani rocks. She helped me fix my Gaia profile so that the irritation blue lines at the end disappeared. *hearts her so much*

Link of the Day: My Girlfriend's Dead - The Vandals.

It's on Google Vid, so it'll load fast -- basically, it's the music video for My Girlfriend's Dead, a song by the Vandals. Why am I linking to it? Because it's made of stick figures, the song is snarky and upbeat and one summer, I spent a whole week listening to it non-stop. XD Click it.

Also, I have my Yuletide request now! *dances* I don't have the source material with me since I'm at college, so I'm d/ling it to make sure that I can stay true to the spirit of it when I start writing. And I made a backdated post about the specifics of my requests, though I think that I really was specific enough in my original post, but I figure that a little more detail won't hurt. [livejournal.com profile] ryuutchi, [livejournal.com profile] cairnsy and [livejournal.com profile] ceresi are playing as well, I know -- anyone else from my flist volunteer?
fickle: (only fiction)
Link of the Day: Yuletide Treasure.

Yuletide is one of my favorite Net shinies. XD It's basically a Secret Santa fic exchange with a twist, the twist being that only rare fandoms are allowed on the Yuletide list. That means it's perfect for filling that weird little request you've had lurking in the back of your brain -- you know, the one for that fandom that doesn't exist because you know barely anyone else who's read/seen the source material?

On my personal squee list of available fandoms were Archie, Batman Beyond, Big Wolf on Campus, Calvin & Hobbes, Dilbert, Enid Blyton, The Little Princess, To Kill A Mockingbird (so that I won't be the only one to have slashed them), Legally Blonde, Little Women, The Charioteer, Saved By The Bell, Stick It, Lord of the Flies and Hedda Gabler.

I nearly requested the last for the sake of English AI High but decided against it so as to preserve the sanctity of the Kathy-Amila writing collaborations. XD And I'm not telling you what I did request or if it was even from the above fandoms (there were many, many more that made me squee), but I am telling you to go sign up.

Sign up now! XD

Link of the Day: George Bush Speechwriter.

A nifty little app where you can drag and drop chunks of words from a bar on the left to create a speech, then hear it read out to you in Bush's voice. I took especial glee out of having him tell me: "The United States should leave Iraq immediately. I will attack the innocent and kill hundreds and thousands of people should enemies strike our country."

Lookie the Smallville icon I made!
fickle: (pissing me off)
Link of the Day: Gay Marriage across the US.

A nicely drawn map of the US, color-coded to show the various regions that are for, against, and silent on the issue of gay marriage. Rather depressing to look at, so you might want to bear in mind New Jersey's rule on gay marriage while you read it.

The Fossil Fuel Problem. NOT WHAT YOU THINK. )

Link of the Day: First Post Progam.

Basically, you make a post in your el-jay, backdated to before you had the journal, with your RL contact information in case of an emergency. I've stuck it up in my userinfo, and all of you should do the same.

Also, anyone out there willing to be my el-jay contact if things go wrong? I listed my cell phone number, my parent's phone number but I was thinking that I should stick down the number of someone on el-jay so that you'd at least get an update somewhere on my radio silence.

Link of the Day: Get Your War On.

Originally, the subject line read 'Get Your War On Comics' and then I realized that it looked like I was trying to declare war on comics and thought better of that. XD The link is to a set of comics all about the American War in Iraq, Operation Enduring Freedom (or whatever the hell they're calling it this week) and Bush's general idiocy.

My favorite strip? Plan B.

You've got to love black humor.

Link of the Day: I Am A Japanese School Teacher.

An African-American guy goes to Japan to teach English, and writes a short weekly article about weird things that happen to him.

That's the Cliff's Notes summary of the page. Why should you read it? Because the guy is a fantastic writer. He's got a great sense of humor, a fresh, engaging style and honestly, if you want to read about culture shock manifestations and how kids are weird world-wide, I can't think of anything better to recommend. The articles are all pretty short too, so you can just read a few at a time but I should warn you that they're dangerously addictive.

Oh, and one more thing? I'd never heard of kancho before reading those. Now, I will never forget it.

Link of the Day: Bubble Bush.

Hate George Bush? Sick of his policies and how protesting seems to get you absolutely nowhere? Take a quick break to check out that site and play for a little with your very own falling Bush. The page is made up of bubbles, with Bush falling down in the direction that your mouse points. Pull him up and down through bubbles, make him sit up, balance him on his head -- he's totally at the mercy of the mouse pointer, so have fun manipulating him.

Link of the Day: Feminist (Yes, you are).

Sars takes on the issue of people saying "I'm not a feminist but [insert belief here]", and exactly how stupid a statement that is. I'm actually a major fan of her blog, which tackles both actual cultural issues and just talks about her own life. It's generally well-written, funny and easy to empathize with. My favorite of her columns would actually have to be slut which I loved enough to already post about, otherwise it would have definitely been today's link.

Apart from that, I was supposed to go watch films on immigration from 6-8PM today for my Women's Study.

Guess what happened?

The first film was delayed by US Customs who said that it contains obscene or immoral material. The plot of the film? It's a documentary made by a guy who spent a year living alongside illegal immigrants in order to record their lives. What an obscene idea; it's really immoral of him.

At any rate, we watched a replacement film called "Well-Founded Fear" about the asylumn-seeking process, which was double the length of "Living With Illegals", meaning I was stuck there from 6-9. I liked the film though but its length made me rather fidgety and of the 'just let them in, already!' mindset. America's a big country. It's not like it's China. I am strongly against tightening immigration laws and I detest the fact that the new limitations on asylum seeking make it harder for people to apply, or to appeal the decision if they're denied the right to stay in the US.

Link of the Day: The Dangers of Shoujo Manga.

Is shoujo manga a bad influence on girls? This article certainly seems to think so. I didn't recognize all that many of the titles listed except Paradise Kiss and Gravitation, but the article does make a fairly persuasive argument, even though the manga that I personally prefer don't really seem to fit into that category.

...Paradise Kiss, though, I will admit to being disappointed that the guy I liked turned out to have been a rapist, and Gravi, well, I read it for the slash so shut up :P

Link of the Day: 404 Research Lab.

A cool site with a bunch of links to different 404 pages, tips on how to make good 404 pages and some of the most amusing ones. It definitely makes being lost on the web more bearable.

Also, on a news-related field, Google bought YouTube. Thankfully, Google Play is going to remain up since the servers are so much faster than YouTube's. It's why I spend most of my time listening to music there instead of YouTube, though if I want to watch eps of something, I'm more likely to be on YouTube or just bittorrent it.

Speaking of bittorrents, I've just watched My Super Ex-Girlfriend and am currently watching Cars. Opinion of the first is completely and totally BLAH. It's got a really negative portrayal of women but to balance that, they seem to have made the guys unlikeable as well. There's absolutely nothing new or interesting in it, and as far as I'm concerned, I'm sorry I even bothered wasting my time watching it. The only way I could be more annoyed with it would be if I'd actually spent money buying a ticket to see it in the cinema.

On the bright side, Cars rocks so far. XD Which is surprising since I'd expected to be bored by it but nope, it's just funny enough to make the sentimentality bearable. For examples of what make sit worthwhile -- tractor tipping, carflies, and an Arnold car.

Link of the Day: What did historical swords weigh?

A well-researched essay that talks about swords and their weights in relation to how they're used today, and how they used to be used. Succinct, informative and it even has pictures for those of you still haven't graduated past picturebooks.
fickle: (Asian fairy tale)
Going over some of my old dj entries, I noticed that I'd run a link of the day section for about a month, where I'd just make an entry with a link and a short explanation of why that link should be clicked. So, I'm trying that again -- no limits on what the links are to, could be games, fic, boys kissing, girls kissing, politics, anyway. I'll try to mix it up.

Link of the Day: Halloween costume trends, 2006.

Princess in the lead, and Pirate's in second place. Know what caught my attention? Ninja's only in 13th place. Poor ninjas. More people dress up as pumpkins than ninjas!

Also, Batman's in place 15. After SpongeBob Squarepants. But who's surprised? It makes perfect sense that kids would rather dress up as a giant yellow sponge in pants than a guy who wears tights and his underwear on the outside -- I mean, really, which costume do you think is more appropriate for cold October nights?
